TSC to host second safety forum
Sue Scott

The Tippecanoe School Corporation will host the second in a series of meetings to inform parents on a variety of school safety issues. TSC Safety and Security Manager Aaron Gilman, along with school resource officers and other safety specialists, will provide information on the corporation’s emergency preparedness plans and initiatives, as well as resources for parents navigating concerns about bullying, social media and more.

The second session will be held at 6:30 p.m, December 13 in the media center at Harrison High School. School Resource Officer (SRO) Beth Frazier will lead a discussion on social media and its impact on student relations, student conflict, and potential bullying situations. SRO Frazier will provide parents with monitoring resources for electronic devices and offer advice on how to have a conversation with their students regarding their online experience. In addition, the TSC Mental Health Liaison Megan Ulrich will cover warning signs and indicators that your student may be struggling with their mental health. Ulrich will also provide resources and opportunities for both parent and community intervention to help address thoughts of suicide or self-harm. Conversation and interaction on both topics is encouraged and presenters will be available upon conclusion of the event for questions.

The third safety forum is slated for March 7 and will focus on social media apps, vaping/CBD/drugs, and alcohol. Presenters will take a deeper look into the applications that students are using today and how it may allow opportunities for students to communicate under the parent radar and expose them to potential dangers. Discussion will also be held regarding legislative changes, technological advancements, and accessibility concerns that have influenced the drug and alcohol culture.

The fourth session is scheduled for May 16 and will include information on internet predators and provide an annual review of safety programs.

Once the locations for the third and fourth sessions are confirmed, they will be posted on the TSC website.
